Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is another common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Similar to chlamydia, gonorrhea can affect both men and women and may lead to various symptoms. However, it's important to note that many individuals infected with gonorrhea may not experience any symptoms. When symptoms are present, they can vary between people and may include:

For Women:

  • Increased or abnormal vaginal discharge, often yellow or green in color.
  • Pain or burning sensation during urination.
  • Painful menstrual periods.
  • Abdominal or pelvic pain.
  • Pain or bleeding during or after sexual intercourse.
  • Rectal pain, discharge, or bleeding if the infection is present in the rectal area (from anal sex or other contact).
  • Itching or irritation around the genital area.
  • Sore throat or throat discomfort if the infection is transmitted through oral sex.

For Men:

  • White, yellow, or green discharge from the penis.
  • Pain or burning sensation during urination.
  • Pain or discomfort in the testicles.
  • Rectal pain, discharge, or bleeding if the infection is present in the rectal area (from anal sex or other contact).
  • Sore throat or throat discomfort if the infection is transmitted through oral sex.
  • Just like with chlamydia, it's important to highlight that many people with gonorrhea may not experience noticeable symptoms, which is why regular testing is recommended for sexually active individuals, particularly those engaging in high-risk sexual behaviors.

If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to serious health complications, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women and epididymitis in men. Additionally, gonorrhea has developed antibiotic resistance over time, which makes timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment even more critical.

If you suspect you have gonorrhea or have been exposed to it, it's crucial to get tested and seek medical attention if needed. Gonorrhea is usually treated with antibiotics, and your healthcare provider can guide you through the necessary steps for diagnosis and treatment.
